CROSSROADS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL PARTNERS WITH MT. VERNON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT LEAD THE WAY
Mount Vernon, IL – April 26 2018 – Crossroads Community Hospital is pleased to announce their partnership with Mt. Vernon Township High School’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) programs for the school year 2018-2019. Crossroads is dedicated to engaging students in our local schools to encourage their return to our community when they are ready to start their careers. “We hope to help facilitate education and exposure to careers in the healthcare field for our local community students,” says Amanda Basso, Crossroads CEO, “we want to make an impact on their education and their lives so they want to return to Jefferson County once finished with their post-secondary education.”
Project Lead the Way is a biomedical program that is offered to students at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Over the span of four years of classes, these students are exposed and educated in curriculum that includes principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, and a final class in Biomedical Innovations. The final class culminates in a capstone project presentation. “Classes like these are an exceptional opportunity to the students in our community;” says Dr. Anthony Vacca, Crossroads Pulmonologist, “given the chance, during my high school career, I would have gravitated towards a program like this.
HOSA is an extracurricular club that PLTW and health science students can join at the high school. Their mission statement: “To recruit and retain qualified students to the health professions and provide personal, career and leadership development opportunities to be academic, college, and career ready!” By partnering with Crossroads, the students enrolled in PLTW and HOSA will be able to engage with current healthcare professionals for mentoring and guidance as well as real time career exposure.
“I am so very pleased that Crossroads has partnered with Mt. Vernon Township High School and the HOSA program,” stated Crossroads Board of Trustees Chair, Dr. Kevin Settle, “the collaboration will benefit many students in our community and introduce them to local healthcare providers and career building opportunities.”
